ATTRACTIONS
OF THE PANTANAL
The beauties of the Pantanal can be explored in many
different ways. Choose one:
Trekking :: The Pantanal is crisscrossed
by trails passing through the most diverse landscapes:
woodland, bushland and marshland. Generally, the tourist
farms organize treks within their area.
Photo safari :: An open vehicle safari
takes the traveler to more remote regions where he or
she can photograph and film the local wildlife. Traveling
through the Pantanal is easier during the dry season,
when the roads are more accessible.
Sport fishing :: Sport fishing is one
of the most popular activities in the region. A vast
network of rivers (all of which are tributaries of the
Paraguay River) supports an enormous amount and variety
of fish. During the closed season (from November to
February) fishing is prohibited. The main rivers are
Aquidauana, Miranda, Negros, Abobral, Paraguay, Nabileque
and Aquidaban. Fishing licenses can be obtained in any
office of Ibama (Brazilian environmental protection
agency).
Horse-back riding :: This is the best means
to explore the Pantanal with its numerous inundated
areas. There are no designated trails for horse-back
riding. It is possible to go on these excursions together
with rural workers driving their cattle. For horseback
riding it is essential to wear long trousers, socks,
closed shoes and a hat, and to use insect repellent.
